Winnebago Voyage: Canada...Ontario

We made it across...and, it just took a few minutes! We first filled up with the "cheap" $2.99.9 gas in town to postpone buying the almost-four-dollar gas in Canada. Then, we paid our $12 to cross the International Bridge to the Canadian part of Sault Ste Marie. On the southbound side of the toll booth there was a LONG line of cars waiting. I don't know if they were just waiting to pay their bridge toll or whether that's where they went through US immigration. We got a good view of the locks from the bridge, but taking a picture was hard since it was facing the morning sun, and in some places there were wire fences.

When we got to Canadian immigration we waited just a few minutes and then pulled up to the booth. Since the guy is at car-level, we were up a lot higher, and he couldn't see me or the dogs on my lap. All he asked was whether we've ever been to Canada before, where are we going, and whether we have any firearms. He then just looked back at his screen and Tommie didn't know he was through with us until he finally told us to get moving!

The part of Sault Ste Marie we saw was pretty sad. Google Maps led us through town to the Trans-Canada Highway and we headed east. The early part of that stretch has a lot of abandoned barns and buildings. It's a mostly two-lane highway through lots of evergreen forests. The highway has lots of rock walls, so most of what we saw were rocks and trees with an occasional view of water. We were looking for a place to pull over and let the dogs out, but there are only a few rest stops, which are not very well marked. They do have quite a few wide paved semicircles beside the road for pullouts. We saw almost no mile markers, so used Google Maps to keep up with where we were. We found a nice picnic area to pull over for lunch and it had a short walk to a little river with some falls.

At first I was worried about my phone signal, since it started out at just two bars of 3G, but in most places I had two to four bars of LTE on the "Bell" system. I also got an alert from Verizon saying they knew I was in Canada and that my plan won't have any extra charges.

I had picked out a campground at Mattawa which is almost in Quebec and it had great reviews, but we aren't too impressed...partly because they just had a storm go through and there is mud around the gravel at our campsite and also because the power is a little weak and the plug is at the back fence instead of on a post. We had to get way to the back of the site to hook up power.

My Capital One credit card is working nicely and gives me a text with the US dollar amount every time I use it.
