We got up early to take the ferry across the river to Old Quebec. There were just a few other people on the ferry, and we were glad we went early since the town wasn't yet crowded. It was an overcast day, which meant my pictures aren't nearly as nice, but if the sun had been out, it would have been too hot to be comfortable. We walked for over 4 miles all around the town, and there are steep hills! There is a fortification wall around most of it with the citadel at one end, which is an active military installation.
The streets in this old section of town are narrow and paved with cobblestones, with the buildings right on the street. There are hotels everywhere! We noticed many people smoking....a lot more than we're used to seeing now. There are many shops, some of which look exclusive, and of course lots of souvenir shops. In the lower section of town, there are artisans displaying their crafts and most are dressed in period costumes.
Tomorrow we will head north, and still have not decided whether to stay on the coast into the Arcadian Peninsula or whether to take a more direct route to Nova Scotia. (Although no route is very direct, since we have to go around the tip of Maine, which does not have any roads across it!) I may not have much phone data service, but I'll get a post uploaded whenever I can.
