It rained quite a bit during the night, and we just barely got the dogs out in the morning before it started again. There was thunder with the storms, too.
About mid-morning, it lightened up a bit, so we started out on route 550 to Silverton....close to the same route we'll take by train tomorrow. It was foggy, cloudy, and overcast most of the way. We would see a little bit of sunshine and think it was clearing up, but then it would start raining again. So, I didn't take many pictures. I hope we'll have sun for the train ride tomorrow!
When we were at one of the peaks, we heard thunder again, and it started raining, hailing, and snowing...all together! We started down right away to get to a lower elevation!
Silverton is an interesting town. It is filled each day for about 3 hours by two trainloads of tourists, but other than that, it's pretty quiet. It's an old mining town and they have a wonderful museum that we spent a couple of hours in.
We had planned on making a fairly long loop tour through Ouray, Telluride, and Cortez, and back to Durango, but since the weather was so bad, it wasn't worth driving that far.
