We saw lots of sights today, but spent most of our time in the car. It was a cloudless day, with a high that hit 100 degrees! We plan to leave the dogs in the motorhome in the morning and go back to Arches for a quick trip, so we can do a couple of the short hikes before it gets too hot.
We started out our day in
Arches National Park, which is only about 5 miles from our campground. There are a lot of red rock structures that aren't arches, so much of it similar to the Valley of the Gods that we saw two days ago. There are a lot of rocks perched on the top of spires that look like they would fall at any moment! Dogs are not allowed on any of the trails and we didn't want to leave ours in the car, so we only saw the arches you could see from the road.
Next, we took the drive down route 279, which ends at the potash plant (at least the pavement ends!) There are some petroglyphs on the rock walls and one more arch. This road follows the Colorado River.
Our other tour was the
La Sal Mountain Loop Road, which took us on the other side of 191, also along the Colorado River. It goes past the
Red Cliffs Lodge, and then through Castle Valley. It's full of potholes and I had to keep dodging them, but the scenery was wonderful!
