We left Colorado by heading north on route 13 which became route 189 in Wyoming. For miles, we kept seeing little ground squirrels scurry across the road, but we managed not to hit one! There were quite a few who had been squashed, and the magpies were having a feast. Of course, some of them died in the process, too.
We saw lots of sheep in the fields and a few shepherd's wagons. There were a few scattered pronghorns, but I never could get a picture.
We hit I-80 and headed east to stop in Rawlins. We want to camp tomorrow at Lander, WY, but it was pretty far for one day, so decided to break up the trip. We had the afternoon to explore two museums in Rawlins.
The first was the Wyoming Frontier Prison Museum. We had a guided tour of the building that was Wyoming's first state penitentiary, and was in use from 1901 till 1981. It was a little creepy but really interesting. Our guide described how the prisoners lived and were managed. They have a reproduction of the gallows which was designed to open the trap door by water running into a bucket, so that no one had to push a lever. They also have the gas chamber that was used to execute several prisoners.
After that, we visited the Carbon County Museum, and talked with two women who gave us lots of information about the pioneer migration and the history of this area.
