We will be in this area for a week, but there are lots of things to do. We had a hard time deciding what to do first!
One of the top things on our list was to take the drives through Custer State Park. Our campground is just a few miles from the park, so we will probably take them more than once! We started out on the wildlife loop of Custer. They don't have bears here, but do have bison, pronghorn, deer, prairie dogs, and wild burros. The burros are not native to this area, but were brought in as pack animals, and were just let go. They now thrive here and love to beg from tourists! There were five or six females with babies, as well as at least one male.
We drove the Iron Mountain Road, and took in the views of Mount Rushmore. We took a hike around Sylvan Lake and just made it back to the car before a drizzle started. Then, we started back south on the Needles Highway, which is aptly-named. Both the Iron Man and Needles roads have several small one-way tunnels on them.
