Winnebago Voyage: Driving to Glenwood Springs

We left Montrose and headed north on route 50 again, but this time turned north onto highway 133. Again, the landscape kept changing from green to brown and back with some red. Most of highway 133 follows the north fork of the Gunnison River and goes through the McClure Pass at 8,758 feet. We had views of lots of snow-capped mountains. Somewhere around Redstone, we picked up the Crystal River and followed it to where we joined route 82 into Glenwood Springs. We had two fairly long waits for road construction.

Our campground is on a terraced hill overlooking I-70 and the Colorado River. We ate lunch and went into town to the visitor center. There are hot spring pools here, but we won't do those. We drove the car back the way we came, so we could make some stops along the way. We took the side road into Marble, where they are still mining high-quality marble. That's where they took the marble for the Lincoln Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The town is tiny and pretty messy with junk in every yard. And most yards have at least several big chunks of marble sitting around.

We drove through Redstone, which is a beautiful little town which was built for the workers in the coal mine. The owner practiced "enlightened industrial paternalism" and wanted his workers to have indoor plumbing and electricity in the late 19th century! Most of the houses are still in pristine condition and are painted beautiful colors.
