Winnebago Voyage: Oklahoma to Arkansas

It was still 86 degrees and humid when we drove off at 8:00 am today! The heat is still very oppressive. As we drove, the landscape started looking like home with green hills and trees. We stopped at the Arkansas welcome center and got some good information and literature from the woman there. We drove past Fayetteville, where my parents lived during the first years of their marriage and where my mother finished college.

We are camping at Prairie Creek Campground on Beaver Lake, which is just east of Bentonville and Rogers, Arkansas. It's managed by the Army Corps of Engineers, and only costs $11 a night for seniors! After we got set up and had lunch, we drove into Bentonville and went through the Walmart Museum, which is in the building where Sam Walton had his first store. It is well-done and gives the history of his family and his business. They have huge scooped ice cream cones for $1.29 at their soda fountain. The town is very attractive with a nice center square.

There's a world-class art museum here that was founded by Sam Walton's daughter Alice and is sponsored by Walmart. It's closed on Tuesday, so we'll go back on the next day or two.

We came back to the camper for a left-over dinner. We had to drive to the showers, and while we were out, took a drive around this huge campground. There was a large herd of deer by another campsite. They are obviously very used to people!
