We left Medora early, and drove south to the Badlands of South Dakota. We stopped for groceries near Rapid City, since the towns we are heading to don't have a supermarket. There were LOTS of motorcycles on the road since this is the first day of the rally in Sturgis. We drove by Sturgis on highway 90 and I grabbed a fast picture of their name on the hill.
Our campground is just outside the southeast gate of the Badlands National Park, and we have a view of some of the hills out our window. They had huge amounts of rain last night, and there is some standing water in the campground. When we drove through the Badlands, it was obvious that all the landscape had been freshly washed. It's a constantly changing landscape, and we expect it changed a lot last night! We think there's a lot more green than we've seen in the past, and we'll ask at the visitor center tomorrow.
We drove the 24 miles each way on the main road through the park, but didn't stop at any of the overlooks or trails. It was hot, so we'll do that earlier on another day. We saw some bighorn sheep, more prairie dogs, and some burrowing owls.
