Smoke and Fog

We drove through about 40 miles of nothing except trees in the national forests along the Rogue River.  The smoke from the forest fires got worse and worse.  We stopped in Grants Pass to get gas, and the gas attendants were wearing masks because the smoke was so bad.  The visibility on the highway was bad and the smell was awful.

We drove down 199 into California and the road got narrower and narrower as we wound through the mountains.  The smoke finally cleared some, but then there were low-hanging clouds.  So, we never saw the sun today.  We were lucky, though, to get out of the smoke which covers much of Oregon.

We got settled in a campground north of Crescent City among redwoods.  We drove a few miles up the coast, but all we saw were gray skies, gray water and rocks.  We found an oil-change place for my car, and it came with a much-needed wash.

We found a seafood restaurant in Crescent City for dinner, and there were seals and sea lions on a float in the harbor.
