We drove north into Springfield, Illinois and found a great camping spot on the grounds of the Illinois State Fairgrounds. They have over 300 sites that are mainly used during the fair, but also for other events, and for tourist campers. The fair doesn't start for a few weeks, so right now there are just a handful of tourist campers, plus the rigs for folks at a horse show. We have a big grassy area all to ourselves. The dogs can just run around off-lead, and of course, Baxter is in heaven!
We got here around noon, ate lunch, and then went into town. We started at the Visitor Center, where they gave us a discount ticket to the Lincoln Museum and a free street-parking pass. We spent a couple of hours in the museum, which went into depth about the real life of Abraham Lincoln, who was a very controversial politician. Only after his assassination was he viewed as such a powerful visionary, and his greatness realized.
We spent a little time at the historic Union Station, part of which has been converted into a small museum, and describes the making of the movie, "Lincoln". Stephen Spielberg and his crew worked hard to make everything as authentic as possible and some of the props and furniture used in the movie are displayed here.
We bought some home-grown tomatoes at a corner stand and then stopped at the Farmer's Market in the fairgrounds for some fresh corn. Tomato sandwiches and corn-on-the-cob for dinner! Yum!
