Winnebago Voyage: Through most of New Mexico

Since our bodies were still on Eastern time, we got up in time to see the sunrise (not a usual occurrence for us!), and we got an early start. We drove through Santa Rosa, which is one place we had considered camping last night, but were glad we hadn't since they had a severe storm that didn't come as far as Tucumcari.

The landscape was constantly changing....sometimes buttes, sometimes mesas (I had to look up the difference!), lots of sagebrush and prairie grasses. There were interesting piles of rock, some of which were shades of red. There were occasional cattle grazing on scrub that didn't look like it would feed anything! I took a constant stream of pictures from the passenger seat, in spite of a few bugs and some raindrops.

I-40 goes right through the middle of Albuquerque, but we didn't have any traffic problems. We hit some rain west of there and watched the temperature drop into the 40's...with both of us in shorts! We saw the lava fields (only a couple of thousand years old) along the highway near Grants.

We picked a nice campground outside of Gallup, and drove back into town to look around. We'll stay here another night and explore a little tomorrow. We went to look at Red Rock Park, where we camped when we were here 20 years ago. We walked around inside the El Rancho Hotel, which has housed many film stars in the golden years when New Mexico was promoting the area as a location for films.
