It was cold and drizzling when we woke up, but after
breakfast, we drove into Panguitch to go to their street yard sale. There weren’t many tables set up since the
weather was so bad, but Tommie bought a nice winter jacket for $5.00.
After lunch, we drove down highway 89 to look at the
campground possibilities for our next stop. The one we liked
the most is on highway 9 just outside the east entrance to Zion, so we made our
reservations for Monday through Wednesday nights.
It was still cloudy but we drove through Zion just to see
where things were. I took a few
pictures, but hope to get some with sun and blue skies next week. We stopped at the visitor center, which was
packed, and there was a long line for the shuttle.
We wanted to see what was out the west entrance and saw that
there was a long line of cars waiting to pay to get in, so we kept going and
decided not to return that way. The west
entrance is congested and commercialized.
We headed west to hit I-15 to go north and then took scenic highway 14 east. Soon after we started to climb the mountain on highway 14, two emergency vehicles
passed us. As we climbed the mountain,
there was more and more snow on the ground.
Somewhere near the top, there were a lot of emergency vehicles at a pull-off
and we saw two bikers beside the road.
We think that some vehicle went over the edge.
I drove about 30 MPH for quite a few miles and we met a snow
plow in the other lane. It was pretty
scary where there were drop-offs beside the road. We finally got past the slush on the road and
I could relax a little. We turned onto
highway 89 and came back up to Hatch.
