We started our day driving back east on I-94 and then 50 miles north to the northern section of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It was a LONG straight road with lots of trucks heading up to the oil fields in the northern part of the state.
The park has a road that's 14 miles in and you drive back on the same road. The first stop has what they call "cannonballs" that were formed when sand grains from an ancient river were cemented together by minerals dissolved in groundwater. We saw our first bison at that stop. Some were already in the field, and we saw others running down the hill to join them and as they approached, we hopped back in the car! Several other times we had to stop and wait for them to move out of the road. I got a video of two males sparring. There are several overlooks showing the Little Missouri River below.
Next, we drove back east on I-94 and went south to what they call the "Enchanted Highway". People in the town below have constructed a series of huge metal sculptures along the road. They weren't very "enchanting", but very unusual. We rode through lots of countryside with more huge fields of grains and other crops.
After dinner, we took a short drive to the north section of the Roosevelt park, which we will do the rest of tomorrow. There have prairie dog towns which are fascinating to watch. And, of course there are more bison.
