Manistique, Michigan

Today we just drove about 210 miles into the upper peninsula of Michigan.  A lot of the road went along the edge of Lake Michigan.  I had picked a campground on the lake shore at Manistique that has high reviews, and it lives up to the praise!  We got a site that backs right up to the lake. Pat & Kirk got a site in the same campground, so we had one more day with them.  We went to the Kitch-iti-kipi Spring which is just north of town.  It's a 40-foot deep natural spring where you can see the bottom.  They have a "raft" that has a cable attached to a wheel, and someone has to turn it to pull the raft across.  There are lots of huge fish swimming below.

Manistique has a boardwalk along the shore by the lighthouse that's just on the other side of our campground.  We saw the sign that explains why there is so much wood and sawdust on the beach here.  There were 5.1 million tons of sawdust dumped into the lake between 1863 and 1912 when the lumber industry was here.
