We headed south from La Crosse down a two-lane highway beside the Mississippi. It's still very wide in places, and we wonder how they can keep up with the safe shipping channels! We crossed the river at Prairie du Chien, and got gas in the tiny town of Marquette in Iowa.
I had been pricing gas, and was really confused, since the price for regular seemed to vary wildly from 3.32 to 3.62. The lower prices seemed to have been posted several days ago and we thought that something had sent gas prices skyrocketing. But when we stopped, we found that the lower price is for what we usually buy which has 10% ethanol, and the $3.62/gal is for no ethanol. I found an article that said that Nebraska and Iowa have only started adding ethanol during the past year. That seems really weird, since they are big corn-growing states! They probably knew it would make the gas less efficient!
We rode on two-lane roads all the way to Forest City, where we found a nice campground in preparation for touring the Winnebago factory tomorrow. We stopped at their Visitor Center and rode around the huge buildings of their complex. There are motorhomes in different stages of production everywhere. We'll take the 9AM tour tomorrow, but aren't allowed to take a camera.
Our campground is a nice county park on the Winnebago River with a suspension bridge to a golf course across the river. There's also lots of grass, which pleases Baxter!
